How to Embrace Your Small Business

By Kat Lessin

Embrace Your Small Business
A piece of my desk by katlessin
When I first was starting one of my many businesses, I had a tendency to want to act like a large business. I had an incorrect perception that being a large business was the goal. I set similar work hours to my previous employers, I had someone else record my voicemail greeting, I ordered large quantities of supplies (much to the distress of my accountant), all in the efforts to appear like something I wasn't -- a larger business. I see this with my clients, time and time again.

What I didn't realize at the time was that there is power in being a small business and it is best if you embrace it.  When you are a small business owner you have the power to create your own rules, schedule, focus, priorities and most importantly, your own business culture.  I was trying so hard to make my small business appear like the exact thing I loathed and escaped from.

You get to create your ideal work environment that suits you best.   You can hire the people you actually want to work with.  You can dress the way you feel comfortable.  You can order the office supplies that inspire you and make you happy. You can choose your days off and you can choose your location.  You have choices that many large business don't because you are smaller. Embrace your small business and your choices that come with it.

What choices will you make?  Will you choose the 9-5p same old, same old?  Will, you choose the black pen or will you go with purple?   Will you have music in the background?  Will you take off Friday afternoon to be with family?  It is time to design your business lifestyle and culture to best suit your needs and desires, all while making a living, doing what you love.

If you are a small business owner or entrepreneur, start looking at your business from a place of power, choices, options and the freedom to create.  You will be much happier and more successful for it.

Kat, I love the line "It is time to design your business lifestyle and culture to best suit your needs and desires, all while making a living, doing what you love."

When I finally start embracing my life and what my business can be now, my business became much more consistent and my family much more content. I am even excited to see how my business culture changes as life changes. Loved the post! Thanks.
